MySpace Magazine — Coming Soon To A Newsstand Near You

Imagine this - one of the greatest internet success stories ever publishes a magazine.

Yahoo Magazine? No

Google Magazine? No

EzineArticles Magazine? Hmmm, probably not.

MySpace Magazine may be coming soon to newspaper shops and newsstands near you.

What happens when a wildly successful internet website ponders publishing a magazine. People get jealous and tell them it can’t happen, it’ll fail. Ever since AdvertisingAge announced that MySpace is considering partnering up with Nylon Magazine to publish MySpace Magazine just a few days ago, the blogosphere has been ripe with criticism. Take some of the following quotes recently posted on blogs:

  • “I personally think it’s a terrible idea, and maybe hurt MySpace with its credibility, trust and most importantly - the brand.” - Posted on InstaMedia.
  • “I guess this means we are in the middle of the Web2.0 cycle and it’s starting to look more like Web1.0.” - Posted on Good Morning Silicon Valley.
  • “maybe MySpace the Magazine will give you yet another alternative to Internet porn.” - Posted on Jossip.
  • As you see, news of MySpace Magazine brings out the critics and the cheapshots. I, however, think that it would succeed and would truly like to see it succeed.

I’m no expert in the magazine publishing business, but what I would like to see is for MySpace magazine to stick to its web roots. That includes making the magazine completely free and having pages that resemble the website’s pages. MySpace can then cover the publishing costs by putting small ads multiple times on all the pages, perhaps ads in the same shape as the banner ads that are found all over the MySpace website.
